What is Peanut immunotherapy?

Peanut allergy can significantly impact daily life, but advances in treatment offer hope. We are one of the few centres in the UK, and the only centre in Southampton, to provide cutting-edge oral immunotherapy for children and young people with peanut allergies. Our goal is to empower families with life-changing therapy that reduces the fear of accidental reactions and enhances quality of life.

How peanut immunotherapy works

Peanut immunotherapy involves carefully introducing small amounts of peanut protein to the body and gradually increasing the dose over time. This process, known as desensitisation, helps retrain the immune system to tolerate peanuts at higher thresholds. While not a complete cure, immunotherapy makes patients “bite safe,” meaning they are less likely to experience severe reactions from accidental exposure to peanut-containing foods.

A personalised approach to treatment

We use licensed, prescription-only treatments supervised by our experienced team of doctors and nurses. Sessions are conducted every two weeks over a six-month period, ensuring steady progress without disrupting school or work routines.

Highly Experienced Team

Our specialists and nurses have been actively involved in the clinical trials that paved the way for peanut immunotherapy treatments. They have years of experience in administering this treatment safely and successfully with minimal discomfort.

Unlike every other clinic we’re aware of, we offer sessions on Saturdays, making the process more accessible for families travelling from across the country.

We remain at the forefront of allergy research, contributing to advancements in immunotherapy and exploring new options for younger children.

Who is peanut immunotherapy for?

Peanut immunotherapy is currently licensed for children aged 4 to 17 years, meaning you must start treatment before you turn eighteen, if you want to continue receiving it as an adult. Many teenagers find this treatment transformative, giving them the freedom to eat out with friends, travel, and live independently without constant worry. For parents, it provides reassurance that their child is better protected against severe allergic reactions, including the rare but serious risk of anaphylaxis.

For younger children, research shows that early intervention could further improve outcomes, as younger immune systems are more adaptable. While immunotherapy for children under 4 is not yet widely available, we are happy to assess your child’s peanut allergy and discuss potential future options.
